The key difference that makes a Bordeaux "Superieur" is that the vineyard must meet higher standards of planting density. The more vines there are, the harder each has to fight for survival, resulting in stronger, deeper root systems and healthier vines. Only about a quarter of the area of Bordeaux vineyards is given over to Bordeaux Superieurs.
